Buchenwald Ball – 80 Years Dancing in Freedom

Jewish Museum of Australia

To mark 80 years of Buchenwald Balls in Melbourne, an exhibition of photographs by Andrew Harris documenting the recent balls will be displayed. The exhibition will also include early photographs, poetry and other items connected to both the balls and the “Buchenwald boys” themselves.

Every year for 80 years since their liberation from Buchenwald Concentration Camp, a group of boys, and their ever-growing families, have gathered to grieve and celebrate together here in Melbourne.

The men, and now their families, gather every April to say Kaddish, the mourner’s prayer, for their murdered family members, raise a glass of whiskey to wish one another L’Chaim, to life, and dance together, rejoicing in their freedom.

This exhibition Buchenwald Ball – 80 years Dancing in Freedom will mark this significant milestone.
