Volunteering at the Jewish Museum of Australia

The Jewish Museum, a community museum, is supported by over 250 valued volunteers
who contribute by:

  • Guiding visitors
  • Helping with reception and sales in the Museum Shop
  • Working in school and community education
  • Exhibition research
  • General administration work
  • Cataloguing of our collections
  • Fundraising

As a volunteer you become part of a group whose skills contribute to and are valued by the local community. But it’s also an opportunity to develop new skills, meet new people, gain valuable work experience, build your confidence, and have fun!

We provide induction and on-the-job training, support and supervision and personal accident insurance.

Who Volunteers at The Jewish Museum?
Our volunteers are from all walks of life and age groups. You only have to be over 15! Corporate volunteering projects are welcomed and can provide businesses with changed staff perspectives
on a range of issues.

How Much Time Is Needed?
Positions are available weekdays and Sundays depending on the role. Most are between 1-3 hours a week or fortnight. Sometimes we have short term projects but always welcome long-term volunteers.

Museum Guides:
The guiding team of the Jewish Museum is continually expanding and new guides are particularly welcome. As well as informing visitors about our permanent and new exhibitions, from time to time there is also a need for guides to learn how to lead the following: groups of adults from community groups, school groups, synagogue tours and participate in teams who give talks to community groups.

New guides join a training course and then serve an ‘apprenticeship’ with an experienced guide. After that, they are welcome to participate in a stimulating ongoing education program each Monday morning. Speakers include leading academics who speak on a wide range of topics embracing religion, history (Jewish and comparative) and contemporary issues. Regular workshops are also conducted on guiding methodology, including presentations and recent guiding trends.

If you would like to become a volunteer at the Jewish Museum and become a member of this friendly and vibrant “family",
contact the Volunteers’ Coordinator for details or phone the Museum on (03) 8534 3600
